Canon EF 35mm f/2 Reviews

WhatDigitalCamera.com reviews the Canon EF 35mm f/2 and writes;
“Given that the lens tested here is capable of covering both formats it is likely to appeal to a large number of potential buyers, which must make good commercial sense for Canon. The lens looks good, with a semi-matt eggshell finish, and feels like a traditional film-camera standard lens, making it just the right size to offer good handling both when changing lenses and during shooting.”
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Photozone.de reviews the Canon EF 35mm f/2 and writes;
“The Canon EF 35mm f/2 may not be the most sexy lens around but its performance is generally very solid. The resolution is very high and evenly distributed across the image field even at max. aperture. The amount of vignetting leaves something to be desired at f/2 – 1.1 f-stops is too much for a full format lens within the tested APS-C scope. “
Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Petteri reviews the Canon EF 35mm f/2 and writes;
“Small. Inexpensive. Decently built. Loud. Bright. Sharp. No optical defects worth mentioning. “
rating: N/A

The-digital-picture.com reviews the Canon EF 35mm f/2 and writes;
“The Canon EF 35mm f/2.0 Lens can be useful for landscape photography if 35mm is the focal length that is right for you. Full body portrait photography is another good use for this lens. I don’t recommend using a 35mm focal length lens for much closer portrait work (such as head shots) because body features (including noses) tend to get exaggerated. “

Fantastic all-around lens! | Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
“Just a short note… When I upgraded to a DSLR system from my old-school 35mm, I was used to a nice standard 50mm f1.8. Well, digital doesn’t roll quite the same way since you convert all of your factors for us Rebel/40D users. After conversion, this lens offers 56mm measurement, a very close range to my older 35mm SLRs. When I bought this lens and the 50mm f1.4, I barely ever used that 50mm, designed for portraits, and an outstanding job it does. But the 35 is terrific for shooting outdoors or with family and friends, and takes a terrific photograph for a fair price. I highly suggest trying this lens out. “ – by Peter C. Harris

Outstanding performer | Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
“I seldom post reviews but this lens deserves one so here goes. Over the years I have owned several good Canon lenses, including two L Series; and this lens is best of the lot. Based on my experience with this lens, some of the reviewers who are less than enthusiastic about it must have received a dud because this is a great little lens – as sharp as you could ever want and the colors it produces are vivid in the true meaning of the word. The added bonus from this little charmer is its weight. On my 30D it feels like there is a feather out there in front. If you’re looking for a sharp walkaround lens, you could hardly do better at twice the price!” – by J. R. Landers

Great lens for the price | Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
“Build quality is toward the low end of Canon’s scale; not as nice as the EF 28mm f/1.8, but not as cheap as the EF 50mm f/1.8 II. It does, at least, have a metal mount and a distance window. Since it doesn’t have USM, it is rather noisy when autofocusing compared to the 28, and full-time manual focus is not available. But at least the focus ring spins freely in auto-focus mode (unlike the 50 f/1.8 II), so you don’t have to worry about damaging the motor by turning it accidentally. Picture quality is quite good; wide open, the center is decently sharp, and the edges not too bad at all; stopped down to f/4, it’s even better. If you’re looking for a roughly standard-length lens for an APS-C Canon camera without paying the premium price of an L-series lens, and you need something faster than f/2.8, I think this is the one to get. “ – by Craig Dickson

Amazing “always-on” lens | Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
“I just got this lens today so my review is based on just a couple of hours usage. The lens performs great in low light conditions – both indoors and outdoors. Some people have complained that the bokeh is not smooth – I don’t agree – the bokeh is smooth enough for me and looks very pleasing. I’m stunned by the performance of this tiny beast. Only dislike is the build – the focus ring is not that smooth and has a very cheap feel. My Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM and Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM have a much better build. “ – by Arvind Kalyan

Good for the price, great compared to the kit lens | Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
“Good lens, sharp on a Canon 50D. When new, the manual focus ring was tight, after two months, it has noticably loosened. Compared to the kit lens, 28-105 IS, the improvement in image quality is extremely clear. Kit lens is now gathering dust. For landscape, the 35mm is quite good, sharp, and I have no problems with contrast or colors. For product photography, this lens shines. F8 to F16 produces fabulous results. Soft wide open, but what lens isn’t. At F18 and above, defraction occurs, I don’t shoot at F20 or above for the most part. I took this lens to a horse show and was amazed at the clarity, from approx. 40 feet away, you can see the individual hairs on the horse. I was impressed..” – by Kermit in New England

Good lens | Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
“This is a good lens. And take nice pictures. After testing it, this lens takes better pictures than the canon EF 17-40mm f/4.0 L. However as far as I am concerned it is still not wide enough (after 1.6x crop factor) for landscapes. It is also kinda noisy.” – by Ali Roustai

Small, sharp lens w/ poor low-light focusing | Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
“This lens is small and fast, producing crisp, pleasing images at most apertures, but focusing poorly in low-light, and being unusually noisy… The image quality seemed just as sharp as the more expensive Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Wide Angle Lens for Canon SLR Cameras, producing slightly cooler colors than that lens. The USM motor of that 28mm lens is much quieter and faster than this 35mm… I really like this lens, it’s solid, small, lightweight, and a reasonably effective focal-length. Sadly, I was looking for a large aperture prime to use in clubs/restaurants, which makes the slow focus-hunting in low-light a deal breaker. For the price, this is a very nice lens. Recommended for daylight/outdoor use. “ – by Omar Siddique

My first dip into the “Prime” pool | Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
“This product has a good number of excellent reviews that give you a general idea of what is good about this lens… so I’ll be brief. Reasons I love it: Very quick to focus, Sharp, Useful in full body portraits to head-shots (on a 1.6x DSLR like a Rebel/450D), Great low-light lens (I use it all the time in clubs), Very light weight, Useful focus window (unlike the Rebel XSI/XS/T1i’s kit 18-55mm IS lens), “EF” (Useful on full frame, and “crop” frame sensor camera’s… so I’ll be keeping it as I upgrade), Solid build quality (metal lens mount, light, but has a good “solid” heft to it), About equivalent to a 50mm lens on a full frame sensor or 35mm format camera., Good “carry around” lens (Light, unobtrusive, small, good focal length, very useful aperature), Shallow depth of field at f/2, great for soft backgrounds “ – by Lrn2Go

Canon EF 35mm f/2 Specifications

Fast 35mm wide-angle lens. With a minimum focusing distance of only 0.8 ft. (25cm), you can approach the subject closer and still obtain a more natural wide-angle effect. You can even obtain good background blur for portraits.

An affordable lens that’s ideal for tasks like group photos and other applications calling for excellent optical performance and moderately wide focal length. It’s compact and lightweight, and with f/2.0 speed, it’s a compelling alternative to a wide-angle zoom lens for low-light shooting.

Wide and Fast
If you need an ultra-wide angle and a large aperture, one of the following lenses will fit the bill. Ultra-wide-angle lenses can capture scenes beyond your natural field of vision. The EF 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye, the widest of them all, has a 180° angle of view. For more normal-looking wide-angle shots, there are longer wide-angle lenses up to 35mm with the maximum aperture you need.

Nikon 85mm f/1.8D AF Reviews

Momentcorp.com reviews the Nikon 85mm f/1.8D AF and writes;
“Quite an astonishing lens, performance is almost at top of the line. The lens outperforms it’s price with ease, delivering great results. Contrast is pretty damn good even wide open. I rated this lens for portrait photography, as this is what the lens is more or less made for. I would rate it 4 out of 5 for other types of shooting, the reason for this is quite simple, on a portrait lens it’s ok for some softness wide open. From f/2 and to f/8 the lens shows remarkable results. Definitely worth it’s price.”
Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

SLRGear.com reviews the Nikon 85mm f/1.8D AF and writes;
“In its own right, the 85mm is an excellent lens, offering class-leading performance for chromatic aberration, very low corner shading at wide apertures, and practically no distortion. Sharpness is excellent at ƒ/2.8, only showing a touch of softness when used wide open. For the price, if you need the 85mm focal length, the lens is an excellent option we have no trouble recommending.”
Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Slrlensreview.com reviews the Nikon 85mm f/1.8D AF and writes;
“Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm f/1.8D is a pretty solid lens, that despite its aging design still manages to show some character. Image resolution is quite decent on both APS-C as well as FF cameras “
rating: N/A

Photozone.de reviews the Nikon 85mm f/1.8D AF and writes;
“The Nikkor AF 85mm f/1.8 D was a very boring lens during the tests simply because it showed a exceptional performance in all tested categories. Besides the lab results the lens shows a beautiful bokeh (out-of-focus blur). If I had to name a weakness it may be flare in contra light but it is a minor issue in the otherwise very harmonic package. So if you´re looking for a portrait lens or a similar application where you would like to isolate an object from its environment this is an ideal lens. Highly recommended! “

Sharp lens, beautiful bokeh | Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
“I bought this lens for my Nikon D80, and I love it! It is incredibly sharp, and renders beautiful bokeh. I’ve taken many portraits with this lens, and all have turned out beautifully. If you’re like me, and can’t afford the 85mm f/1.4, this lens is perfect. I’m so glad that I bought it, and now that I have it, I can’t see myself ever needing the f/1.4, this one does the job amazingly well. “ – by Lori Collett

its all that, and good for basketball | Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
“Thanks to other reviews and advice found online, I bought this lens so I could shoot my son’s basketball games and hopefully get some “stop motion” shots in a mediocre lit gym. The lens arrived in record time, and I shot a game the same day. I was pleasantly surprised at the results, and am sure I would have gotten some even better shots if I had had time to read the book or study up on the new camera (that arrived the same day), my Nikon D-90. Very satisfied with this purchase, and highly recommend this lens. yes; I was considering a different brand, but am glad I paid a bit extra for this lens instead. “ – by Big B

This thing delivers | Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
“If you have a grand to burn…get the 1.4. If you are a practical person, enjoy maxin’ out the gear you currently own before buying more stuff get the 1.8. This lens produces absolute beauty. The Bokeh is very…and i mean very pleasing and, of course, sharp as hell. I own various fixed lenses and even the 80-200mm af-s behemoth(serious “bokeh-er”)and I’m still drawn to my 85mm 1.8 like a magnet. I believe in squeezing my current gear before moving on to 1.4’s for example. That’s just me. This Nikkor is indeed fantastic. This is your lens if you need above average performance at a reasonable price. “ – by Orlando Gonzalez

Wonderful lens, especially for crop-size DSLRs | Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
“I like the 85mm focal length very much. On a Nikon crop-size DSLR, the 85mm focal length is a very useful short-to-medium telephoto length, giving a nice field of view with just enough distance compression to get a pleasant telephoto perspective. This lens’ wide aperture gives plenty of control of depth of field, allowing you to isolate your subject and get just the right amount of defocus elsewhere in the frame. I tend to prefer to use it at f/2.8 or so, although having the ability to go to f/1.8 is certainly useful at times. “ – by Glenn Carpenter

No need for the 85 f/1.4 for my needs! | Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
“I LOVE this lens!!! When shooting, I ALWAYS go to this lens for that “has to be sharp” photograph. I can’t believe I took so long to purchase this, but am so glad that I did! Focus is fast and accurate, and it does suffer from some CA, but only in extreme cases…but can be corrected easily in photoshop! This lens has a great build, great weight and a great feel to it. 85mm is great for portraits, and the f/1.8 offers a VERY NICE bokeh!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!” – by Ahmed Roberson “A.Roberson”

my new favorite lens! | Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
“i really struggled over whether or not to drop the extra $1000 and get the 85 1.4. i decided to save my money for now, and i must say i am really pleased with this lens. it’s by far my favorite lens i own, and i have rarely taken it off my camera. the clarity is great, and the colors even seem more vibrant. beautiful DoF, sparkly bokeh, and sharp. a definite must-have for portraits!” – by M. Mosley “photomom”

Killer optics & build; but can be tricky to focus, | Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
“This is a solid performer on any Nikon, although the old-school screw-drive AF system will render it less useful on less compatible models. The depth of field is so narrow at f/1.8, that users will have hard time nailing sharp focus on moving objects if they’re limited to manual focus mode (as you would on a D60 or D5000 for instance). On my D90, this lens is awesome — razor sharp with professional-looking bokeh. I never liked the built-in flash using my other lens (16-85mm Nikon), but I find that shots taken with my 85mm look totally different — the bokeh is so rich that the harsh background shadows otherwise captured with lesser lenses just disappear in the blur. Even with functional AF on my D90, accurate focus tracking can be tricky on moving subjects. I suspect that if this lens was updated to AF-S, it might focus a tad quicker (and not drain my battery so fast). But overall, this is a great lens for the price. Flawless optical quality. “ – by Erik H.

Fantastic lens! | Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
“Great contrast, bokeh, and speed! Only wish you didn’t have to be 3′ from the subject. This lens is a keeper.” – by Aimee Starr

Excellent Portrait / Low Light Lens | Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
“This is an excellent lens for portrait and low light photography. I used it to shoot a cheerleading group at a night stadium game – the portraits of the cheerleaders were sublime!!! While I am better using my F2.8 70-200mm lens for football action photos, this lens was perfect for closeups and group shots of the cheerleaders. I hope to use this lens for high school basketball. Can’t wait. Very pleased!!!! “ – by G. Witenske

Nikon 85mm f/1.8D AF Specifications

Lens-making is an art–Nikon artisans craft Nikkor optics from the finest materials, taking pride in adding their intellect and technique to bring the world’s finest lenses to life. They push the leading edge of lens-making in their effort to provide the “glass” that makes the world’s greatest pictures.

AF Nikkor lenses work with Nikon SLRs for optimal performance, even the very latest. The Nikon 85mm f1.8D AF Nikkor is a compact and portable medium telephoto lens ideal for indoor or outdoor portraits. An excellent choice for your first telephoto lens, it features subtle blurring of background for beautifully natural and evocative portraits, Rear Focusing system for fast and smooth optical performance, and weighs 13.2 ounces.

Nikon Super Integrated Coating ensures exceptional performance
To enhance the performance of its optical lens elements, Nikon employs an exclusive multilayer lens coating that helps reduce ghost and flare to a negligible level. Nikon Super Integrated Coating achieves a number of objectives, including minimized reflection in the wider wavelength range and superior color balance and reproduction. Nikon Super Integrated Coating is especially effective for lenses with a large number of elements, like our Zoom-Nikkors. Also, Nikon’s multilayer coating process is tailored to the design of each particular lens. The number of coatings applied to each lens element is carefully calculated to match the lens type and glass used, and also to assure the uniform color balance that characterizes Nikkor lenses. This results in lenses that meet much higher standards than the rest of the industry.

Rear Focusing
With Nikon’s Rear Focusing (RF) system, all the lens elements are divided into specific lens groups, with only the rear lens group moving for focusing. This makes autofocusing operation smoother and faster.

Distance information
D-type and G-type Nikkors relay subject-to-camera distance information to AF Nikon camera bodies. This then makes possible advances like 3D Matrix Metering and 3D Multi-Sensor Balanced Fill-Flash. Note: D-type and G-type Nikkors provide distance information to the following cameras: Auto exposure; F6, F5, F100, F90X, F80, F75, F70, F65, F60, F55, F50, Pronea S, Pronea 600i, D2 series, D1 series, D100, and D70s/D70. Flash control; F6, F5, F100, F90X, F80, F75, F70, D2 series, D1 series, D100, and D70s/D70 cameras.

“The barrel and mount are plastic, making for a very light, though not so sturdy-feeling, lens. Its silver ring indicates Sony’s Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM)- while it focused relatively quickly and without much hunting on our A380, it was far from quiet. “
rating: N/A

WhatDigitalCamera.com reviews the Sony 50mm f/1.8 SAM DT and writes;
“A very useful lens that performs well and carries a rock-bottom price tag. If I were a Sony user then this lens would simply have to be in my camera bag.”
Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

LensTip.com reviews the Sony 50mm f/1.8 SAM DT and writes;
“Pros: very good image quality at the center and the edge of the frame, insignificant chromatic aberration, small distortion, fairly well corrected coma, very good work against bright light, quite fast autofocus. Cons: noticeable astigmatism, vignetting larger than in with competitors, autofocus could be more accurate and quieter, too much plastic in the body “
rating: N/A

Photoreview.com.au reviews the Sony 50mm f/1.8 SAM DT and writes;
“Flare was generally well-controlled and distortion was low enough to be negligible in test shots. However, vignetting was apparent in shots taken at f/1.8, although largely resolved by f/2.8. Bokeh was quite attractive, provided backgrounds weren’t busy.”
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

SLRGear.com reviews the Sony 50mm f/1.8 SAM DT and writes;
“But, for the money you really can’t go wrong; the only way it could be any better would be if it were full-frame compatible. If you’re contemplating a move to a Sony full-frame body, this lens won’t make the transition. But for everyone else looking for a nifty fifty, it’s a no-brainer decision.”

Kurtmunger.com reviews the Sony 50mm f/1.8 SAM DT and writes;

Instantly great pictures | Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
“If you are an amatuer photographer and are looking for a lens that will give you a crisp focused image and then “lightly blur” everything around the focused imaged, then this is what you’re searching for. A lot of photographers explain that this type of photography is very fashionable right now, but what I like about it is that it captures the moment that you are trying to capture. If I want to take a picture of two people talking to each other, that’s what I want, I don’t want all the other people in focus. This lens accomplishes that feat. Very happy with my purchase.” – by H. Marvel “Hynson”

good lens for a good price | Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
“pretty fast lens, and the pictures look great. Not as great as I thought it would be in low light, much better than my kit lens, but pictures are still blurred. I am still working on getting the hang of it, but so far so good. Can’t go wrong with the price, and re-sale value isn’t bad. “ – by deal getter

Excellent prime lens for the photographer on a budget | Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
“We wanted a prime lens for portraits, available light shots, and just general “walk around” use and this lens is great for that. It has a plastic body and mount but they don’t feel cheap or flimsy. It does not come with a camera hood but since the lens is so recessed it doesn’t really need one but I’ve found that if you use a filter you may get glare without one. It’s intended for APS-C sensor cameras so you wouldn’t be able to use it on a full frame camera like the Alpha 850 or 900 without vignetting. Overall, I like it a lot. It compares favorably to a Minolta prime that I’ve used in the past on film cameras. The plastic body and mount don’t bother me as much as they do other people but I’m not very rough on cameras. “ – by B. Godfrey

Very sharp portrait lens | Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
“I love this lens, sharp and very beautiful color with the lens, I have in for 6 months, and took about 5000 pictures with it, so far so good. the price it not that expensive for good portrait lens, if you like to take portrait picture, then you have to have this lens. However Minolta 50mm f/1.7 is cheaper, and I think it’s little faster than this lens. I love both lenses.” – by Patrick Nguyen “Trance Music”

Great lens w/plenty of light for the price | Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

In addition, a developed Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) is used to drive the focusing lens group.
